Types of Diabetes

There are various types and causes of diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes
It is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It is impossible to say why it happens. But one in ten people has type-1 diabetes. Thanks to the advancement of medical science, type 1 diabetes can be detected early and steps can be taken to manage it.

  • Type 2 Diabetes
    It is a lifestyle disease that is affecting more than 25% of young adults. Contributing factors such as family history that is either your parents or siblings have diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or having a sedentary lifestyle are some of the reasons for Type 2 diabetes. It is also the most common type of diabetes.

    Gestational Diabetes
    This is a form of diabetes that affects mothers-to-be during pregnancy. It is caused due to drastic changes in the hormones. Also, the placenta can produce hormones that make the mothers less receptive to insulin. Women who are overweight or gain too much weight during pregnancy are most likely to develop Gestational diabetes.

    The good news is that diabetes can be managed with proper medication, exercise, and a nutritious diet. The first thing to do is get regular checkups. Early detection can help reduce the damage that diabetes can do to your life and living standards.
    On average a young adult that is someone between the ages of 20 to 25 should get a routine checkup once a year. Adults in the age group of 25- 40 should have a routine checkup once every six months.

    In most cases, doctors will prescribe insulin to help control diabetes. Of these, the above-mentioned types only Type 1 diabetes is lifelong. Further monitoring and medication may also be required depending on the severity of the condition.
